A complex project to revive Sendling

Formerly known locally as the "Sendlinger Wüste," the site at Herzog-Ernst-Platz, on the corner of Radlkoferstraße and Pfeuferstraße, is being developed by GWG, Munich's municipal housing company, into what it describes as one of its most important and complex major projects. On around 8,000 square metres, the plan combines 180 apartments, offices, a nursery, and a ground-floor ALDI SÜD store of around 1,000 square metres, with completion planned for spring 2023.

The apartments are aimed at a broad range of tenants at affordable rents, including trainees and municipal staff as well as families. The building will also include flats for the Sozialdienst Katholischer Frauen and office space for Münchner Aids-Hilfe, which will manage its own units on site. Münchenstift is realising a project called "Wohnen unterm Regenbogen" within the development, aimed at discrimination-free housing for older lesbian, gay, trans, and intersex residents. "We're giving ideas room to grow," said GWG managing director Christian Amlong.

"As the city's housing company, good local retail matters to us as much as social infrastructure," Amlong said. "We're pleased to have brought in ALDI SÜD, a well-established local retailer, as our anchor tenant." Justus Rehn, ALDI SÜD's contact for property projects across the city, welcomed the joint project with the city and pointed out that around 60 per cent of ALDI stores in Munich are now integrated into mixed-use buildings.
